"news4 at 11" begins with breaking news. >> you can see the yellow tape and police lights surrounding the scene. just a few hours ago, a metrobus slammed into a tree. it happened off fourth street and atlantic avenue in southeast washington. more than a dozen people were on the bus, and some of them had to go to the hospital. the driver was interviewed by police and explained what happened moments before the crash. wendy reiger is covering the story at our live desk, and she'll have the report coming up in a few minutes. turning to the weather now, yet another storm coming our way. it's going to have an impact on tens of millions of people. right now a winter storm warning is in effect for parts of our area, and we are not alone. >> this is a live picture from

indianapolis. up to 8 inches of snow there expected there before it heads our way. >> kansas city, missouri, new video just in of a southwest airlines plane stuck in a snowdrift. the engine stalled. the plane got stuck on the tarmac. 60 people had to be rescued. >> and that same system is barreling down on our area right now. the next couple of hours could be the most dangerous for drivers. our team coverage begins tonight with doug kammerer tracking the conditions. >> the most critical over the next hours is our temperatures have now dropped well below freezing in many areas in just about every location. take a look at the temperatures at or below freezing. 32 degrees in washington. 30 degrees, manassas. 28 in frederick, 28 in gaithersburg. as this rain continues to fall, it will freeze instantly. that's why we have a freezing rain across the area. you can see radar showing that freezing rain all across the area. most locations, it's falling at a fairly light clip. but just about everybody reporting at least a coating of ice already.

and we've got a lot more on the way of moisture making its way our way. parts of the area are under a winter storm warning. that includes montgomery county, loudoun county and everybody to the west. but down to the south, the other half with freezing rain advisory right on through 6:00 a.m. we will see problems, even along the i-95 corridor and in through portions of southern maryland as temperatures have cooled below the 32 degree mark. outside right now, we are already seeing that ice starting to cover everything. veronica johnson out on our patio with a little more on that. >> i've only been out here now for a couple of minutes, but the event has been going on for a few hours now, freezing rain and drizzle. the temperature on the patio surface, much like our sidewalk and roads, it's at 29 degrees. and i've got a metal chair next to me that has been sitting out here for that two-hour period. it's reading currently at 31 degrees. this indicative of of course our sidewalks and our cars. and there is a coating of ice already on the chair that has been sitting out here for a while. tomorrow morning we're going to have to do a little bit of

scraping, as well as a little bit of work to get that car door open. i just talked to our producer a coupling of minutes ago who walked in, got off the road, and she said her windshield was freezing up and her windshield wipers too. i do think we're going to see some major disruptions across the area tomorrow morning. hopefully some delays. we may even have a cluster of power outages, doug, to our north and west. >> the north and west is really the area we're going to focus in on a little later on. we're going to talk a lot more about our storm tonight. and then we have a potentially bigger storm coming up this weekend. i'll break it all down for you coming up in a couple of minutes. >> thanks, doug. this storm is having a big impact on travel there is concern, of course, about ice on the roads. in the air hundreds of flights have already been canceled. shomari stone is at dulles airport with that part of the story. shomari? >> reporter: that's right, jim. we're talking nearly 1600 cancellations nationwide. 50 at reagan national, and almost 30 here at dulles. >> i am totally disgusted, just

totally disgusted. >> reporter: frustrated words from pia scott. tonight she has two choices. >> this is horrible. >> reporter: sleep at a hotel or here at dulles airport. her flight to new york is canceled because of freezing rain. >> the other option is to take amtrak train. >> reporter: take a look at the departure board. canceled, canceled, canceled. >> it's very annoying. >> reporter: the rain and a dip in temperature could cause icy commutes tomorrow morning, and there is a higher chance of ice in the northwest suburbs of d.c. >> it does get pretty bad. every now and then they'll do a good job of cleaning the roads up. >> reporter: inside the salt dome, it holds 2500 tons of salt when it's full. crews will be coming in here with their trucks, removing 400 to 600 tons throughout the night. they're going to take this salt right here and mix it with something called the b mix. >> b mix is basically salt and sand mixture.

>> reporter: 1500 v-dot trucks will mix b mix. pia scott has decided to stay at a hotel tonight. as for tomorrow -- >> i really, really would like to get home. >> reporter: well, i certainly hope you get there, pia. a lot of folks are obviously concerned about their commute tomorrow morning. many of them will have to use their ice scrapers when they wake up in the morning. of course, i can't stand it because that noise is very annoying. i'm shomari stone, news4. our coverage continues with jackie bensen. she is live in frederick county, maryland, where people are already gearing up for what could be a dangerous night and day ahead. jackie? >> reporter: well, doreen, i have to tell you, it's already dangerous. we're getting hit with a light mist. but let me show you what it looks like as it's coming down on the road. take a look down there where my foot. that parking lot looks kind of wet that is pure ice right there. and making for some very difficult conditions. a short time ago, we spoke with the mayor of frederick.

his city is gearing up for what could be a pretty difficult day tomorrow. >> that's what we're afraid of. you know, we're trying to prepare. we never like ice. much rather have two feet of snow than a quarter inch of ice. all we're going to do is try to stay ahead of it. you know, our crews are on call, waiting to come in. we have two sets of crews. one shift will come in first, work probably seven, eight hours. the next shift will come in behind them. >> reporter: and the mayor tells us they have already city officials there have already been in contact with utility companies who are telling them they're making sure that they will have the people on standby in case we get one of those dreaded situations around here that we often do where we get ice on trees, and they start to bring down power lines. live in urbana, jackie bensen, news4. >> because of the storm, news4 today will be on the air at four income the morning. be sure to tune in for the latest on the road conditions and the latest word about any

school delays or closings in our area. back now for that breaking news in southeast d.c., where a metrobus slammed into a tree. there were passengers on board, and the weather may have been a factor. wendy reiger at our live desk now. wendy? >> reporter: right now we know that two people did have to go to the hospital, but they're expected to be perfectly okay. but the driver says he hit an icy spot while he was going uphill and skidded into this tree that was at a bus stop. the force uprooted the tree, moved it 20 feet. a worker had to cut away the limbs because they were tangled in a power line. 14 people were on board that bus at the time. this was at fourth and atlantic avenue in southeast. the bus was headed to congress heights. two people hospitalized. two others say they were hurt, but they didn't need medical treatment. this accident shut down that area just after 7:00 tonight. metro tells us the cause of the accident is still under investigation. at the live desk, i'm wendy

reiger, back to you. more charges could be coming after a bizarre kidnapping and robbery that forced a victim to escape while naked. it all unfolded in laurel overnight. officers spotted a car driving without any lights on near the police station. seconds later, a man jumped out of the passenger side window with no clothes on. that man told police he had been robbed. he said the suspects made him strip so they could steal everything he had on him. the two alleged robbers ended up crashing into a car dealership on washington boulevard. they were taken to the hospital and charged. tips are pouring in. more than 50 of them over the past day and a half in the search for a missing volunteer police officer. one possible lead. richard quick's toyota 4-runner may have been used as a get away car in a violent robbery in louisa county on sunday. police found the vehicle on monday four miles from that scene. the suv was spotted in manassas saturday, along with an unknown man. quick was last seen friday night

charlesville. there is a $10,000 reward for information. there is a big step forward in the effort to decriminalize marijuana in the district. today the d.c. council gave preliminary approval to a bill that would eliminate jail time for anyone caught with less than an ounce of marijuana. instead, people would get a $25 fine for possession. police could still lock up anyone who is caught smoking marijuana in public. a final vote is expected in the next few weeks. supporters are pushing for a voter referendum to completely legalize pot this november. a way to reward students is under fire in montgomery county. eastern middle school in silver spring held a pizza party today for straight a students. students with b and c averages were invited to join a dance party later. but more than 300 students who had grades lower than a c were left out. some parents say that could alienate the students who are excluded and lead to bullying. others say it's quite fair.

news4 has learned that d.c. police are looking into whether two restaurant robberies may be connected. the latest happened overnight at the dominoes pizza on prospect street in georgetown. six men held up three employees at gunpoint and stole money from the store. on friday, four or five masked gunman robbed a carry-out mexican restaurant on 12 street northeast near catholic university. in that case they stole customers' cell phones and cash from the register. miriam carey's family is suing the federal government for $75 million. the lawsuit stems from a high-speed chase and shooting back in october. carey was shot and killed by the police after she rammed her car

then sped off around the capitol. her toddler was in the car at the time. she was not injured. carry's family released a statement today saying that shooting was not justified. they're also calling for a congressional investigation. suspected killers, rapists, and other high profile undocumented criminals found in our area. they've been on the run for years, trying to keep a low profile. but the chase eventually ends. this case started in mexico and ended in landover, maryland. and only erika gonzalez was granted access on board a flight to bring the fugitive back to his own country. >> reporter: shackles, chains, dozens of criminal undocumented immigrants deported back to their home countries. >> these are the worst of the worst here that are being moved. >> reporter: leonard desanity says chartered flights like these out of pennsylvania happen roughly twice a week. why did you come to this country? >> because, you know, we have

better opportunity. >> reporter: alfonso rodriguez tells me he came to the u.s. roughly 15 years ago. he was arrested in our area twice for a dwi and released both times without serving any time. and, no, ice didn't pursue him. >> we have limited resources, and we try and focus those limited resources on the most dangerous criminals. >> reporter: however, i.c.e. recently picked him up at his work site in landover, maryland when they found he was wanted for murder in mexico. he had been running from the law for nearly 20 years. do you know anything about charges for aggravated homicide in mexico? >> no. >> reporter: his story later changes. >> reporter: in 1995, were you involved in an aggravated homicide? >> not really. >> reporter: he boards the flight and is seated in this row, alone. he and several others will make the flight down to brownsville, texas. from there, they'll cross over the mexican border and

immediately be taken into police custody. >> what we're seeing here is a dangerous criminal alien who not only has committed crimes in this country, but is also wanted for a crime in his own country. >> reporter: hours later, the men are back in mexico to face the justice system there. >> last year i.c.e. removed 288 high profile individuals like orstico from across the country. and of those, 13 were from the washington field office alone. so you've got areas like york, baltimore, d.c., maryland, virginia, and all of them are shuttled out from the harrisburg, pennsylvania airport. >> erika gonzalez, thank you. >> thank you so much, guys. a sherman says he spent more than a year as a castaway at sea. now his family in silver spring is overwhelmed to hear his voice.

they all thought jose salvatore alvarenga was dead. he says he left mexico in december 2012 on a fishing trip. he washed up on the marshall islands on thursday, 6,000 miles away. alvarenga claims he ate fish and birds and turtles. he says a friend that was with him died early in the trip. investigators are now trying to verify his story. back with more details about this weather forecast. it sounds like it's already getting ugly out there. >> it is getting ugly out there. we're really in the critical time right now. probably around midnight, 1:00 around the d.c. metro area. then we'll see things improve right this. up to the north and west, this is go to go a while right on through early tomorrow morning. watch out and give yourself a lot of extra time. at the airport we'reeeing light rain. you see that rain visibility is down. but the temperature has actually come up by two degrees. this is very good news down around the airport. 34 degrees is the current number

there. winds out of the northeast at 6 miles per hour. windchill down to 29 degrees. but once again, the temperature above freezing now at the airport. also, fredericksburg, culpeper, pawtuxent river, you have now all come above freezing. 30 in manassas. 28 in gaithersburg. 28 in frederick, and 27 in hagerstown. we have a while to get back to that freezing mark. that's why we have the potential for the freezing rain. we're seeing it all across prince george's county down around charles county, anne arundel and calvert county. out toward loudoun county, winchester, the panhandle of west virginia. we continue to watch this rain and the moisture moves into a very cold air mass. that's why we have the sleet and freezing rain that continues to fall. the snow, it is well up towards the north. around pittsburgh, up around state college. this will only be freezing rain for us. maybe a little bit of sleet mixed in. and then changing back over to rain. let's break it down for you. here we are at 11:30, showing the freezing rain around the d.c. area and back towards the west. rain down towards the south. watch what happens around 3:00 in the morning. the rain starts to move up. we start to see less and less

freezing rain, and we're just dealing with the rain down to the south. freezing rain towards the west. by 7:00 a.m., it is predominantly rain from i-95, especially down to the south and east. right now i think rush hour should be okay in most areas. but notice back around winchester, up towards hagerstown and martinsburg, these are theers that normally have the worst scenario when freezing rain plays out. and it does look like they could again tomorrow morning. tomorrow morning could be very treacherous back towards the west. even portions of loudoun county or up in montgomery county and frederick county could see a lot of problems. please give yourself a lot of extra time. get up little earlier, see if we do have school. i do expect school delays. by 1:00, this system sought of here. and then we're on to a little dryer and a little calmer period. that's good news there. winter storm warning in effect for howard county, montgomery county, loudoun county, northern fauquier and arappahannock. the only here for nearly a court inch of ice. dangerous travel and i do expect delays and cancellations early

tomorrow morning. now, down to the south, this is a freezing rain advisory. it goes through 6:00, but i wouldn't be surprised to see it drop here over the next couple of hours. first, warrenton, fredericksburg and leonardtown and waldorf, maybe a tenth of an inch of freezing rain. and that could really cause some problems, especially on the secondary roads, especially down towards portions of southern maryland. so watch out for that area too. now, rain early tomorrow. but then it gets out of here. we're getting up to 45 degrees. 35 degrees on thursday. so a cold thursday, but still not bad. 40 degrees on friday. a little bit better with mostly cloudy skies. and then here comes saturday and sunday. right now it looks like snow on saturday and sunday. still watching to see if we're going to see a coastal storm develop. if it does, then our snow totals and our accumulation goes way up. right now it's still going to be a mixture, snow, sleet, and rain. we're not exactly sure what we're going to be seeing. we're going to continue to monitor that with you. storm team 4 has you monitored all the time. you can always download our weather app. do that on the google play as

nice little reverse layup there. he finished with 25 points a game high. north carolina, they go on to beat the terps. your final score, 75-63. so the terps, they're back on the court saturday when they play host to florida state. the 2014 winter olympics get started in two days over in sochi. and today west potomac high school, ashley wagner got her first taste of the olympics. the 22-year-old figure skater, just being on the rink today was overwhelming at times. >> getting on to the olympic ice, it made it all feel real. and it felt even better because i went home after nationals and i trained my butt off for three weeks. and i just feel really prepared and really calm stepping out on this ice. >> looking forward to her doing well in sochi there is a little controversy about her being over ♪

so a guy in detroit went out to an estate sale, paid 50 cents apiece for several motown albums. when he got home, this is what fell. a marvin gaye passport from 1964. the guy who bought all the stuff says he got the albums from the family of a man who had worked with gaye. he took the passport to "antiques road show." he learned there it is worth 20 grand. >> wow. >> marvin gaye was only 25 years old in that passport photo. and of course it lists his hometown as what it is. washington, d.c. >> that's pretty cool. that. >> is cool. >> that's our broadcast for now.
